Dave Barrett - Partner, Polaris Venture Partners

Dave Barrett is a general partner in the Boston office. He joined Polaris in May 2000 and focuses on investment opportunities in information technology - primarily, software and enabling technology platforms. He joined Polaris after a 21 year career of success as an operating executive, including management of over 20 acquisitions and mergers as well as broad successes in developing strategic alliances and executive teams.

Through March 2000, Dave served as chief operating officer of Calico. During his tenure, his team repositioned the company and drove seven-fold increases in revenue, customers, and employees, a successful public offering, market value of over $1.5 billion, and its position at that time as a leading e-business infrastructure provider.

Previously, Dave served as senior vice president of worldwide operations for Pure Atria Software Corporation, a $150 million revenue, publicly-held leader in e-business software development automation, which was sold to Rational Software Corporation (NASDAQ: RATL) in 1997 for $1 billion. Before Rational, Dave spent twelve years with Lotus Development Corporation. He led the build-out of the company's global sales & services effort, which established Lotus Notes as the industry's collaborative groupware standard. Lotus was sold to IBM in 1995 for $3.4 billion - the largest acquisition in software industry history up to that point in time. Dave represents Polaris on the boards of 170 Systems, Inc., Applied Messaging Corporation, Imprivata, Netliant, RIS, and Service Integrity. He also served in the past on the boards of Avaki and Centra Software (NASDAQ: CTRA).

David Orfao - Partner, General Catalyst

Prior to joining General Catalyst, David held the positions of President/CEO and Senior VP of Sales Operations and Marketing for four publicly held companies. Most recently, David led Allaire Corporation from 1997 to 2000 as President/CEO/Board Member. During his tenure, Allaire grew from a venture-backed start up to a $119M public corporation trading on the NASDAQ. The company pioneered the Internet Application Server market with industry leading products such as ColdFusion and JRUN. In January of 2001, Allaire merged with MacroMedia Corporation and continues to be a leading Internet software company.

Prior to his CEO role at Allaire, David held the positions of Senior VP of Sales Operations and Marketing at Frame Technology Corporation, Claris Corporation and SQA Corporation. Frame Technology and SQA Corporation were venture-backed corporations that successfully completed Initial Public Offerings on the NASDAQ. Throughout his career at these corporations, David was responsible for building the management teams, the revenue engines, and the worldwide distribution strategies that allowed these corporations to build an industry around their product lines.

Throughout his career, David has been an angel investor, advisor, or board member to several companies including Marketsoft Corporation, Voxeo Corporation, and Firespout Corporation. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Accounting from Norwich University of Vermont (1981).

Steve Schwartz - President and Co-founder, Schwartz Communications

Steve Schwartz is the President and co-founder of Schwartz Communications, one of the nation's leading public relations agencies. Prior to launching Schwartz Communications with his wife Paula Mae in 1990, Steve had been Vice President of Marketing at Interleaf, a pioneer in electronic publishing. Previously, he was Jack Welch's speechwriter at General Electric.

Steve is a Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude graduate of Bowdoin College and holds an M.F.A. from Columbia University's School of the Arts (Writing Division). He is a trustee of Bowdoin College and a director of the Appalachian Mountain Club.

John Simon - Partner, General Catalyst

John focuses on technology-intensive industry-leading software platforms at General Catalyst. He serves as a board member of the following active General Catalyst investments: ProfitLogic, Recruitsoft, and Proteus Mobile. Prior to joining General Catalyst Partners as a co-founder and partner, John founded and served as Chairman and CEO of UroMed Corporation (NASDAQ: URMD), which has recently merged to become Alliant Medical Technologies. Alliant Medical Technologies is a developer and provider of hardware, software, and disposable product systems to healthcare customers. Prior to founding UroMed, he was a venture capitalist with Highland Capital Partners and Charles River Ventures.

John earned a B.A. from Harvard University and an M.A. from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. John is a co-founder and current trustee of The Steppingstone Foundation, a non-profit organization which provides educational opportunities to deserving inner-city students.
